1, two, 3, four or 5?

Hi, let’s say that to rate a song you must award it with stars. The maximum rating is 5 stars, so a great song would be awarded with many stars while an average song would be awarded with one or two stars. Since I enjoy categorizing and organizing everything, I came up with a system or an algorithm if you prefer. The basic standard is a song’s melody. It separates all the songs into two categories: listenable and non-listenable. Just stating the obvious, listenable songs are the ones you wouldn’t change the station or skip in your mp3 playa. Even if the melody of a song is a good enough measure by itself a melodically descent song can be ruined if the oral performance is poor. By the term oral performance, I also mean how appropriate the singer is for the song. Imagine Petri Lindroos from Ensiferum (Viking Metal from Finland) singing Madonna’s Frozen –fail. The next step is really important. It determines if the song is above average or not. Let’s take a summer hit, like Calle ocho by Pitbull. A good enough melody combined with a good enough singing performance. Lyrically, though the song hits bottom. Very, very low quality lyrics repeated many times during the song’s playtime. So it fails to “pass the test” or score 3 out of 5 stars. Now this is where we separate the sheeps from the goats. A 4 star song has almost everything. One may consider a yours 4 star song a his 5 star one. Complexity doesn’t suggest that the song is long. Even a four minute song could be rated with 4 stars. All it would take is melodically, lyrically and why not vocally complexity. Mirror mirror from Blind Guardian is such an example. The final test is not really test. It something you can’t help. Personal meaning. On the road to “favorite!” or “best song eva” a brake up or a relationship a journey or a kiss could do the trick. These memories make a song special to you. And a 5 star song is definitely special. So, to sum up:
1.Melody
2.Vocals
3.Lyrics
4.Complexity
5. Personal Meaning

So το συμπέρασμά μας είναι: "think less-feel more" i guess...:)
    Νice topic btw...

  2. If you want to objectively rate any song, you must appreciate its individual aspects. If your favorite song is lets say Stauros Livikos's Skase you are the exception of the rule. The idea here is to find a universal way to rate songs so if one says “My immortal? 5/5!” you could say “Ok song, nothing special, 3/5 for me” and speak for most of people. Keep in mind that if you ask 1000 people how would they rate My immortal you would logically get 3+, from the most and few would rate it with 4 or 5 stars since it not a very complex song. So in general it would be considered 3 star song. The same goes for lets say a rather average song that gets 1 star. Most would rate it 1 or 2 stars so in the end the average would be close to 1. No one can deny that judging songs it a subjective activity that is why 4 stars songs for you are 5 stars songs for me and vice-versa. Disputes over larger differences like 2 or 3 stars are inevitable and in this case I say someone is wrong.

PS. I consider 5 star songs masterpieces, meaning that they have many great melodies, awesome vocals, inspiring lyrics plus that something special. Even if I like a song that has bad vocals but its about summer vacations and it just reminds of that special trip to Corfu, summer of '89, I would rate with 1 star since my personal feelings of this songs are not nessesarily yours too.
